Apple has filed a copyright-infringement lawsuit on Thursday in West Palm Beach, Florida, accusing upstart Corellium LLC of selling virtual copies of the iPhone and iPad operating systems, illegally under the cover of helping discover security flaws within the system.
Corellium LLC has copied the operating system, graphical user interface and other aspects of the devices without permission. Apple demands a federal judge to stop the violation.
Apple said that it supports “good-faith security research,” and offer a $1 million “bug bounty” upon the discovery flaws in its operating system and gives custom versions of the iPhone to “legitimate” researchers. Corellium, goes further than that, reportedly,
“Although Corellium paints itself as providing a research tool for those trying to discover security vulnerabilities and other flaws in Apple’s software, Corellium’s true goal is profiting off its blatant infringement. Far from assisting in fixing vulnerabilities, Corellium encourages its users to sell any discovered information on the open market to the highest bidder.” states Apple in the complaint.
As per Bloomberg, Corellium’s products provide for the creation of a virtual Apple device, since it actively copies new versions of Apple works, the moment that they are announced. Corellium LLC even doesn’t require users to disclose flaws to Apple.
“For a million dollars a year, Corellium will even deliver a ‘private’ installation of its product to any buyer, There is no basis for Corellium to be selling a product that allows the creation of avowedly perfect replicas of Apple’s devices to anyone willing to pay.”Apple
Apple said “enough is enough” when it comes to Corellium advertising its products, including ones that compete with the Apple Developer Program, according to the complaint.
Corellium is accused of indiscriminately marketing the Corellium Apple Product to any customer, including foreign governments and commercial enterprises without considering limiting its customers to only beneficial groups.
Apple hence, demands an order to block the sales of Corellium Apple products under the policy declaration of violating Apple’s rights and destroying the products service using Apple’s copyright. Apple has also demanded cash compensation which has not been disclosed yet.
