Microsoft hears you on Skype and you think your calls are completely private!

Ever since Smart services including home and AI convenience have come into existence in the globe of technological advances, safety and security have become a home concern. But what delves into the game as a more potential risk over embarrassment is the neglected privacy concerns. Not many weeks have gone by when we got to know that our smart home devices are manually heard over for records and other private purposes by Amazon, Google and every company under the sky who ironically make our home more safe and smart.

It came to almost a huge surprise that companies like Microsoft have access to our call records over Skype and that is manually heard over by the contractors. Leave behind the romances of your room that Google hears, Now your phone calls are also being heard over. The news came out by Vice Motherboard that revealed how Microsoft analyses their services by putting the customer’s privacy on stake.

In a statement to Business Insider, A Microsoft Spokesperson said that

“Microsoft collects voice data to provide and improve voice-enabled services like search, voice commands, dictation or translation services. We strive to be transparent about our collection and use of voice data to ensure customers can make informed choices about when and how their voice data is used. Microsoft gets customers’ permission before collecting and using their voice data. We also put in place several procedures designed to prioritize users’ privacy before sharing this data with our vendors, including de-identifying data, requiring non-disclosure agreements with vendors and their employees, and requiring that vendors meet the high privacy standards set out in European law. We continue to review the way we handle voice data to ensure we make options as clear as possible to customers and provide strong privacy protections.”

As per the Privacy Policy of Skype and Cortana, voice snippets may be analyzed to help improve the services. However, neither gives an indication that the analysis would be conducted by a human contractor. The statement denotes that Contractors receive a sample recording and then are asked to either select a correct automated translation of it or to provide a better one, to train the computer system to improve. But this has never been the right way to correct a franchise approach. The company can take up ways like a feedback system or Analysis port to perform the task. Implementation of privacy concerned technologies is more of a need right now.
